Huawei P9 Lite

Lite and (almost) fantastic

Apple started the trend of selling old models of its phones at lower prices, and other makers have followed suit with cut-down versions of current phones. This doesn’t always go well: the HTC10 Evo was just a rubbish phone named after a good phone. Huawei has done a better job with the P9 Lite, which is about half the price of the fully featured P9 and shares quite a few of its virtues.

Huawei P9 Lite

The case is plastic rather than aluminium, but looks and feels similar, though it’s harder to scratch and slightly bulkier. The screen has the same

SPECIFICATIONS

5.2in 1920×1080-pixel screen • 12-megapixel rear camera • 8-megapixel front camera • 16GB flash storage • MicroSD card slot • 802.11n Wi-Fi • Bluetooth 4.0 • 3G/4G • 147x73x7.5mm (HxWxD) • 144g

dimensions and resolution, and looked just as good to us, covering an impressive 98 per cent of the sRGB color range with great contrast and very decent brightness. An eight-core processor makes Huawei’s version of Android 6 run very smoothly, and most games aren’t a problem.

Rather than the P9’s Leica dual camera, the P9 Lite has a single 12-megapixel snapper that produces smeary, gloomy pictures. You don’t get the P9’s Pro mode for manual control, either. The cheaper Moto G4’s photos are much better – as is its battery life. While Motorola’s budget phone gave us 13 hours 39 minutes of video playback, Huawei’s conked out just past the nine-hour mark, despite having a bigger battery.

These flaw’s don’t put us of the P9 Lite altogether, but they leave the Moto G4 at the top of our list for now.

VERDICT:

A sleek and capable budget phone, let down by a lacklustre camera and poor battery life

ALTERNATIVE:

Motorola Moto G4

It’s more obviously a budget model but a superior camera and longer battery life make this a better phone
