What you need: Windows Vista, 7,8/8.1 or 10
This issue’s Best Free Software is turning into an ‘undeletable files’ special. Files and folders that refuse to be deleted also often refuse to be copied – and this can undermine manual or automatic file backups. Windows helps the process by creating ‘shadow copies’ of files on a regular basis – a little like mini system restore points. To access these shadow copies, you previously had to go through the Control Prompt, but this free new portable tool from NirSoft makes the job much easier. It automatically finds and lists all shadow copies stored on your PC and lets you copy them into another folder for easier access.
NirSoft is also working on a tool to recover deleted data inside shadow copies; we’ll let you know when it’s released.
